Marriott — MI Sales Companion
Founding engineer and tech lead for Marriott’s global sales presentation platform.
I was the founding engineer and tech lead, from the first release through the AWS replatforming and multi-brand expansion. I owned infrastructure, releases, and production reliability, worked directly with Marriott IT and leadership, and coached the engineers on the team.
CONTEXT
Project overview
Sales Companion is the presentation platform used across Marriott’s global sales organization. Hotel sales teams, travel agents, and meeting planners use it to build tailored property presentations, proposals, and digital e-menus for every Marriott brand.
CONTRIBUTION
My contribution
AWS replatforming & cost reduction
Led the move to a load-balanced, auto-scaling AWS architecture built with Docker, Terraform, and a Jenkins CI/CD pipeline. Reduced cloud spend by consolidating services, cleaning up S3 storage, and right-sizing EC2 instances.
Releases & peak-traffic reliability
Owned production releases and hotfixes, wrote the deployment runbooks, and designed the rollback workflow. Kept the platform available through peak-traffic periods by isolating slow search queries, tuning the database, and adding capacity.
Client-facing technical leadership
Represented engineering with Marriott IT and leadership. Led security assessments and SOC 2 change-management reviews, wrote the architecture paper comparing WhatsApp direct messaging with ISV integrations, presented trade-offs for the Brand Property Service, and produced Elastic Cloud usage analytics that informed feature prioritization.
Related products & SSO
Led engineering across related Marriott products (Brands at a Glance, Bonvoy Events, Brands Training Portal, and MLive Dashboard), plus the automated PDF generation pipeline and the SAML SSO servers that authenticate users across Marriott applications.
Mentoring & handover
Interviewed and recommended hires, coached junior engineers and wrote their performance reviews, onboarded developers onto Terraform and Docker, and ran mob-programming sessions with DevOps. Wrote and ran the knowledge-transfer plan for incoming leadership in 2024, then returned in 2026 for a WCAG accessibility audit and load-balancer log diagnostics.
IMPLEMENTATION
Architecture & stack
Containerized Node.js services and a React frontend on auto-scaling AWS infrastructure provisioned with Terraform, with Redis caching, Elastic Cloud for usage analytics, Jenkins for CI/CD, and SAML SSO servers in front of Marriott applications.
